Description

A simple recipe for a moist marble cake combining vanilla and chocolate flavors.


Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons hot water

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 10-inch tube pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add the softened butter and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  5. Stir in the buttermilk and vanilla extract until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Pour about two-thirds of the batter into a separate bowl.
  7. In the remaining batter, mix in the cocoa powder and hot water until smooth. This is your chocolate batter.
  8. Alternate spoonfuls of the vanilla batter and the chocolate batter into the prepared pan.
  9. Use a knife or skewer to gently swirl the batters together to create a marble effect. Do not over-swirl.
  10. Bake for 50 to 60 minutes, or until a wooden pick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  11. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting it onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • For a richer chocolate flavor, you can substitute a tablespoon of the flour with an equal amount of instant espresso powder in the chocolate batter.
  • Buttermilk helps keep the cake moist; do not substitute with regular milk if possible.
