Description
A straightforward recipe for making traditional soda bread using only vegan ingredients.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 1/2 cups unsweetened plant milk (soy or almond recommended)
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
- In a separate small bowl, mix the plant milk and apple cider vinegar. Let it sit for 5 minutes to curdle slightly.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Mix quickly with a wooden spoon until just combined. Do not overmix. The dough will be sticky.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Gently shape it into a round loaf, about 2 inches high.
- Place the loaf on the prepared baking sheet. Cut a deep cross into the top of the loaf with a sharp knife.
- Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Cool on a wire rack before slicing.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, use oat milk instead of soy or almond milk.
- If you prefer a less dense crust, brush the top lightly with plant milk before baking.
