Description
A lighter version of classic sloppy joes made with lean ground turkey and vegetables.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 1 green bell pepper, chopped
- 1 pound lean ground turkey
- 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
- 1/4 cup ketchup (low sugar preferred)
- 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 4 whole wheat hamburger buns
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion and bell pepper. Cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Add ground turkey to the skillet. Cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain any excess fat.
- Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, chili powder, and garlic powder.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer. Reduce heat to low and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, allowing flavors to blend.
- Season with salt and pepper to your taste.
- Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto the whole wheat buns. Serve immediately.
Notes
- For extra vegetables, add shredded carrots or mushrooms with the onion and pepper.
- Use low-sodium tomato sauce and ketchup to reduce salt content.
