Description

A basic recipe for making traditional fry bread at home.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, plus more for frying

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking powder.
  2. Add the warm water and oil to the dry ingredients. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for about 5 minutes until the dough is smooth.
  4. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball.
  5. Cover the dough balls and let them rest for 30 minutes.
  6. Heat about 1 inch of oil in a deep skillet to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius).
  7. Take one dough ball and flatten it into a circle about 6 inches wide and 1/4 inch thick. Poke a small hole in the center.
  8. Carefully place the dough into the hot oil. Fry for 1 to 2 minutes per side, until golden brown and puffed.
  9. Remove the fry bread with tongs and place it on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  10. Repeat with the remaining dough.

Notes

  • You can adjust the amount of water slightly if the dough seems too dry or too sticky.
  • Serve warm with your preferred toppings, such as honey, powdered sugar, or savory chili.
