Description

A simple recipe for a moist orange cake with poppy seeds.


Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Zest of 1 large orange
  • 1/4 cup fresh orange juice
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons poppy seeds
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh orange juice (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract and orange zest.
  5. In a small bowl, combine the orange juice and milk.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
  7. Fold in the poppy seeds.
  8. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan.
  9. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a wooden pick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  10. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting it onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  11. For the glaze, whisk together the powdered sugar and 1 tablespoon of orange juice until smooth. Drizzle over the cooled cake.

Notes

  • You can substitute lemon for orange for a different citrus flavor.
  • For a stronger orange flavor, use the zest of two oranges.
