Description

Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons hot water

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add the buttermilk, oil, and eggs to the dry ingredients. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed for two minutes. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Pour about two-thirds of the batter into a separate bowl.
  5. Whisk the cocoa powder and hot water into the remaining one-third of the batter until smooth.
  6. Pour the plain batter into the prepared pan. Gently spoon dollops of the chocolate batter over the plain batter.
  7. Use a knife or skewer to gently swirl the two batters together to create a marble effect. Do not overmix.
  8. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a wooden pick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Cool completely before serving.

Notes

  • For a richer chocolate flavor, use strong brewed coffee instead of hot water when mixing the cocoa powder.
  • You can use a bundt pan; adjust baking time as needed.
